Saints Peter and Paul Church

An iconic wedding venue in the heart of North Beach.

We will be spending some time highlighting San Francisco wedding venues that have a special (and romantic) place in this city’s history. In this post, we will be heading to North Beach to discover what makes this particular Roman Catholic church such a cherished institution.

If you love Gothic cathedrals with a touch of Romanesque, the soaring twin spires of the Saints Peter and Paul Church will make you swoon with delight. As you approach the church, you will climb the same steps that Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe posed on for their wedding photos at the baseball player’s beloved home church. The radiant rose window hovers above you, depicting the Lamb of God surrounded by the Twelve Apostles in its rainbow glory.

As you enter the premises, a stunning 40-ton marble high altar greets you as a mural of Christ serenely gazing over the pews. Statues of the eponymous Saints Peter and Paul flank the icon of Christ in the middle. You might imagine standing before the altar with your future spouse, gently bathed in the light pouring through the church’s 129 stained glass windows — a true testament to the skill of the European immigrant craftsmen who created them.

The church sits in the heart of Little Italy on 666 Filbert Street and was founded by Salesian priests. When the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed the church, the church was rebuilt and completed in its current Italian Gothic style in 1924. Known as the “Italian Cathedral of the West,” Saint Peters & Paul has served as a cultural and religious center for San Francisco’s Italian-American community since its inception. It has also become the home church for San Francisco’s Chinese-Catholic population and offers weekly masses in Italian, Cantonese, and English.
